Hurricane Irene hit the East Coast just as we were scheduled to go on our first family vacation to Virginia Beach and Williamsburg. We decided to ride the storm out at home to make sure all was well at home so we cancelled VA Beach. :-(
In the wee hours of the dark morning, I awoke to a loud thud that shook the whole house. I kept dreaming that I'd look out the window and the garage and all contents would have blown away. While it wasn't as bad as that, this what we saw when we opened our back door once there was daylight:
View from the front/side of the house. It looks like a whole tree fell, right?
It hit the upper roof, and bounced off the lower roof before landing across the driveway, blocking our cars in. I'm so grateful we (and by "we" I mean Doug!) cleared out the garage to put the cars in there for the first time EVER!
Here's the spot where the large branch split from the tree.
That morning, everyone came out to help since our home was the only one damaged on our block. There was much damage in other parts of town, and lots of flooding and closed roads, but in our little area, we were the most excitement for the neighbors. So there were something like 18 of us (Kait included!) dragging branches to the back of the property as a few guys used an old fashioned saw and muscles to strip the "trunk" of it's branches. The only chain saw in the neighborhood wasn't working.
Once the guys stripped the trunk, they pivoted it to the side of the property so that we could get our cars out. A few days later, another friend with a working chain saw and a fireplace, came and chopped it up and hauled it home.
Damage to the soffit, gutters, facia...
