Schooltime 1830's style
After packing up our soggy campsite, we went over to Allaire Village - a historic town that was bustling in the mid 1800's. James Allaire founded the town when he set up a forge for mining iron ore and melting it into bars. It was a very successful business venture for awhile and the town flourished. There are still quite a few existing buildings and really good tours of the carpentry building, blacksmith, Allaire mansion, the manager's house, foreman's house, and the rowhouses of the workers. There is also a bakery and general store that were open. The stable livery was open, and in it, they recreated school for children 6-12. Nikki and Caroline were excited at this because this would be about the time that Ma and Pa Ingalls would have been kids. (Little House on the Prairie) They got to write on their own slate, and learn how the children were taught. For instance, when you were called upon by the teacher, before you gave your answer, you had to stand and curtsy. Such manners! The girls loved it! Caroline got a Little House on the Prairie style bonnet that she wears quite a bit. They really want to take Memah here when she visits, because Memah is the one who reads Little House on the Prairie books to them on CDs.
